Seldovia Sea Otter
I lived in Seldovia, Alaska for 30 years helping my husband fulfill his dream of owning and operating an Alaska fishing charter business. I was happy to help him and fell in love with Seldovia. It is a quiet, secluded, and beautiful little fishing village, and there are a lot of sea otters around Seldovia; especially at the Outside Beach, which I used as the background for my artwork.
I painted the background using acrylics. I sculpted the sea otter out of a piece of coyote hide. I am not allowed to use sea otter fur in my art, because it is a protected species. Only native Alaskans can harvest and sell sea otter fur.
The nose and mouth of the sea otter are pieces of caribou hide. The whiskers are moose hairs. I found the sea shell at the Outside Beach in Seldovia. The rocks in front of the sea otter were sculptured out of caribou fur. This 9" x 12" piece of art was placed in a deep shadowbox frame, covered with glass for protection. I'm sure it will bring you a lifetime of enjoyment!
