Even though Snowy owls hunt during the day as well as at night, I decided to paint a night scene for the background, using acrylic paint on black velvet, so that my owl would stand out. 

 

I choose a thick piece of Dall sheep fur to create this beautiful Snowy owl, because I needed to sculpt many layers of feathers.  After several days of cutting the fur to look like feathers, my owl began to come to life.

Male Snowy owls are all white.  I make female Snowy owls because they are more colorful, having specks of black on their feathers.  I hand-painted some of the feathers black.  The owl's beaks and the rocks by the water were made from  pieces of caribou hide.  The snow was made from pieces of Dall sheep fur.
